Just do it!

The time will never be just right, you’ll never have everything you need, you won’t have enough money or the right equipment. BUT sometimes, you just need to go do!

Many, many moons ago I was having a chat with my Dad about having kids. I was nervous as I didn’t think I had the right house, I didn’t feel like I was earning enough money, I wasn’t sure if the timing was just right, plus a few other worries that I can’t quite remember.

My Dad wisely said the following:

‘the timing will never be just right, you’ll never feel like you live in the perfect house or have bags of spare money. But things have a funny way of sorting themselves out. When you have kids your entire world will change and you’ll make it work’

3 kids later, I still want a bigger house, I want to earn more money, but I wouldn’t change any of it for the world. I still think about the chat with my Dad to this day as it resonates with a hell of a lot more.

I’ve recently read and watched 2 things in particular that triggered the advice from my Dad. The first is in relation to having the right equipment, and by this, I mean the most expensive and latest equipment on the market.

How many times have you heard or experienced yourself not doing something because you don’t think you have the perfect tech/equipment for it? I know I certainly have.

Imagine if someone told you to go produce a movie. What would you do? I would go and buy the best camera on the market and all the equipment to go with it. I’d then probably waste a load of time figuring out how to work all the kit and set everything up just right.

BUT that thing in your pocket (or in your hand if you’re reading this on your phone) is perfectly capable of shooting a movie. Don’t believe me?

Well, Director Steven Soderbergh has produced his latest film using only the iPhone 7. Yep the iPhone 7, not even the latest model! Just check the trailer out here:

If you want to be a photographer, go take pictures. If you want to be a director, go shoot a film! Pretty much everyone has the equipment to do this right in their pocket, right now.

Like Chase Jarvis says:

‘the best camera is the one that’s with you’

The next trigger… I’m currently reading (well listening to on Audible) The World’s Fittest Book by Ross Edgley.

I’d never even heard of the guy until his face was plastered all over social media for The Great British Swim. What an absolutely amazing accomplishment, swimming around the entire coast of Great Britain in 157 days.

His book is absolutely brilliant and definitely worth a read if you’re looking to improve your overall health and fitness or train for something specific.

The takeaway from this book that links back into this post is the following:
Don’t wait to buy all the latest, fancy gym equipment. Don’t think you need to spend your hard earned money on a gym membership, don’t for goodness sake think there’s some miracle idea, pill or wonder diet that’s going to give you a six-pack.

You just need to start. Get outdoors, go for a brisk walk, a short jog. Do push-ups, pull-ups the list of body weight specific exercises is never-ending. You don’t need a glossy magazine or a detailed complex training manual. Just do it!

The tagline for the book encapsulates this perfectly:

‘how to train for anything and everything, anywhere and everywhere’

The above can relate to so much as we all strive for perfection. But perfection is the enemy of progress. So if you want to do something, just do it!

It might not feel like the right time, you might not have all the latest gadgets and equipment, there could be a thousand other reasons why not to, but things have a strange way of figuring themselves out. And the only way you’ll find out is by doing.
