Setting your goals for 2019 (and 2020)

It’s getting to that time in the year when New Year’s Resolution ideas start to fill the air.

I’ve never really been a fan of new year’s resolutions. In fact, I can’t really remember any resolution I’ve made yet alone fulfilled.

But for Next Year I’m going to give it a try, but it’s something a bit different to the usual; earn £1million, run 50k every week and climb Mount Everest type of list.

The inspiration behind it is from my best buddy Guy Salisbury. I’ve known him for years as we went to school together many moons ago. He’s lucky enough to call LA (Hollywood to be precise) his home and is very successful in his career.

This year I was lucky enough to get out to visit him and stay for a few nights at his lovely apartment backing on to the Hollywood hills. I was staying in his office / spare bedroom and this is where I first caught a glimpse at his 2018 board.

It was a cork board with a ton a different things attached to it. But it wasn’t all monetary figures and fast cars or a long to do list. Instead the board was filled with pictures of his family, inspirational leaders, inspirational quotes, pictures of beaches, blue skies and possible adventures. Kind of like a mood board for the year.

Over a coffee we had a chat about the board and the idea behind it.

Here’s what I took away and will be trying to put into practice for my own board:

  • Use the board as a mood board to set your year out.

  • You don’t need a list of specific goals, if you do have things you want to achieve or events you’re taking part in then feel free to add them.

  • Think about what inspires and motivates you, could be quotes, pictures of inspiring people or places. Add these to the board.

  • Don’t just look forward. Look back on the things that you’re thankful for. Friends, family, experiences you’ve had, your house, your car, your health. You get the point. Gather some pictures that represent these and add them too.

  • Where do you see yourself in 5 / 10 years? What are your long term goals? Break these into small bite size chunks and write down what steps you can start to take in the next year to get you there.

  • Do you have any holidays, small breaks, long trips planned for the year? Make sure you add these to your board too.

  • What else gets you going? What makes you jump out of bed in the morning and gets you excited. Add pictures to the board that represent these.

By now you should have pretty packed board with lots of things keep you inspired and focused throughout the year. With your goals and long term aspirations as well as your inspiration to get there.

Plus, you can always add new things to the board.

Going to give it a try? Please feel free to take a pic and post below. Or if you have any other ideas to set your year out then please comment below.

Here’s to New Year!!!
